Emergency Medicine Residency training programmes were first introduced in the world in 1970 in the USA. In our country, a new medical and administrative organisation was needed, especially under the leadership of university hospitals, based on emergency medical differential diagnosis and application of emergency treatments in the emergency service, which was previously provided by general practitioners only in the form of triage reception, first intervention and invitation of necessary consultants. For this purpose, after a series of meetings held in the early 1990s, it was decided to open the Emergency Medicine Speciality as a new Department (ABD). In April 1994, for the first time, the positions in the medical speciality exam were announced and training was started. In our country, Emergency Medicine Speciality training is still intensively provided in almost all universities and Ministry of Health Training and Research Hospitals. While emergency medicine service was provided in emergency units in Başkent University Faculty of Medicine hospitals, Emergency Medicine A.B.D. was established within our University on 03/07/2006 and Prof. Dr. Nur Altınörs was appointed as the chairman. Between 2009-2016, this position was held by Prof. Dr. Ülkü Sibel Benli. As of 2016, this position is held by Prof. Dr. Cemil Kavalcı.
